NM’s 1st Judicial District Chief Judge says medical malpractice cases are up “significantly" in the area over the last few years.

This is clearly a result of venue shopping, which most states prohibit. We believe health care providers should be judged in accordance with the standards of the community of which they practice. It's about fairness and justice.

An independent OB/GYN practicing in New Mexico pays an average of $102,089 per year for their medical malpractice insurance premium. That rate is much higher than NM's neighboring states.

The system needs reform to not only recruit new providers, but to also retain the ones we have left.

"We see the consequences around us every day. Patients are waiting longer for appointments, driving hours for care or being sent out of state for care. Physicians are choosing to practice in other states with less hostile malpractice laws."

New Mexico has a very real health care crisis and it affects EVERYONE. Read more of Dr. Mark Epstein's Op-Ed below.

NM is an outlier compared to other states when it comes to our medical malpractice system. NM has more large claims (above $500,000) per 1,000 physicians than our neighboring states and the national average.

This makes it difficult to recruit and retain health care workers.💔
